The axis of the hinge
It is sometimes called hinge, pivot, pin, pin, brooch or pin.
It may be very different :
In kind : steel, stainless steel, brass, nylon, etc..,
Shaped : headless pin, round head, in rolled steel sheet (elastic axis), with nipples, etc..
The axis length determines height of the hinge.
It is most often secured with either of the two knuckles (welding, crushing, riveting, screwing, bulge, roll or deformation), this is not the case hinges for which favors ease disassembly, eg hinges "rod bent."
the knuckle
It is itself composed of a "plate" (or wing) and "nodes" (joint or eye). Hinges for the number of nodes is odd we speak according to their position "nodes female" and "male nodes" and by extension knuckles male or female.
The knuckles can be very different in nature :

Steel, stainless steel, cast iron,

Copper, brass, bronze,

Aluminium, zamak,

Plastics, etc..
And be derived from :

Gross forge or foundry

Profiles rolled or extruded

Sheets or rolled flat
A distinction often hinges on the manner in which his knuckles are made :
Hinge nodes rolled sheet (single or double leaf)
After machined hinge profile or gross
Welded hinge "knotted reported"
Note that :
Although we speak of "board" of the hinge can be as complex element. This is true hinges from raw sheet metal parts with their own functions and with some rolled up the node or node hinge hinge welded etc..

Both a single hinge knuckles can be very different
This example is composed of a hinge knuckle end of a profile extruded aluminum and a knuckle from rolled steel Profile
In addition there may be all sorts of finishes and in particular fraisurages holes and to allow for screw mounting, etc..
nodes
The number of nodes can be extremely variable :
The nodes are at least three in the case of a hinge : a knot male surrounded by two nodes females.
When there are only two nodes are spoken instead of "hinge" but it also says "hinge swing-off" or "flag hinge".
The hinges have a large number of nodes are called "continuous hinge" or "piano hinges"
"Hinge" referred to a flat iron which one end is wound on itself to form the "eye" which itself is pivoted on the hinge. Today hinge means of a hinge with a female knuckle (in one or two nodes) attached to the frame and a male knuckle with longer fixed to the door. Small hinges for shutters used are called "lace espagnolette"
The position of the nodes (and thus the axis) against the boards is an important feature of the hinge and can be centered (-O-), or more or less lame (_O_) to allow obtaining a hinge plate when it is open.
The choice of a hinge
Hinge must meet a number of criteria :
The desired shape
The opening angle
The ability to respond to efforts which it is subjected both open and closed depending on its position.
The torque necessary for its own operation
Durability (wear according to the number of cycles, shock hazards and corrosion)
The stacks of games
Ease, or the impossibility of removing
The fixing of the hinge (screws, welding, etc.).
All these criteria are complementary, compatible or contradictory and always costly choices can be difficult. It is not a coincidence that the example of opening a car door is taken as an example to illustrate the QFD (Quality function deployment) "House of Quality".
There are many variants of hinges :
** In three planks,
** Spring,
** With grease,
** With limitation of the opening,
** Double hinge,
**Function integrated hinges in a room, etc..
